Contract Duration: 3+ months

Working Hours: 37 hours per week

Job Responsibilities

Act as an Independent Reviewing Officer, ensuring statutory reviews of care plans for children and/or adults are conducted in line with legislation and local authority procedures.

Chair multi-agency review meetings, ensuring the voice of the child or service user is central to all decision-making.

Monitor and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of care plans, ensuring they are appropriate, up to date, and outcome-focused.

Provide independent oversight of safeguarding and care planning processes to ensure legal compliance and best practice.

Challenge and escalate concerns where care plans or service delivery do not meet required standards or adequately safeguard individuals.

Work collaboratively with social workers, managers, and partner agencies to ensure coordinated and effective service delivery.

Ensure statutory timescales for reviews are met and that all documentation is accurate, timely, and properly recorded.

Promote high standards of practice in relation to safeguarding, care planning, and service provision.

Maintain independence in decision-making while ensuring accountability and transparency in all reviews.

Provide written reports and summaries following reviews, highlighting outcomes, recommendations, and required actions.

Ensure compliance with Social Work England standards, safeguarding legislation, and local authority policies.

Contribute to service improvement by identifying trends, risks, and areas for development within care planning processes.

Person Specification

Essential

Social Work qualification (Degree/DipSW/CQSW or equivalent).

Registered with Social Work England.

Minimum of 3 years post-qualifying experience in children’s and/or adult social care.

Strong knowledge of safeguarding legislation, care planning processes, and relevant statutory frameworks.

Experience chairing meetings and managing complex multi-agency discussions.

Ability to critically analyse care plans and challenge poor practice effectively and professionally.

Experience working in a statutory social care environment.

Excellent communication, report writing, and interpersonal skills.

Strong understanding of the role of an Independent Reviewing Officer and statutory review processes.

Ability to work independently while maintaining professional objectivity and accountability.

Experience working with vulnerable children and/or adults and advocating for their best interests.

Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage workload and meet deadlines.

Commitment to safeguarding, equality, and person-centred practice.

Willingness to attend in-person meetings and work within Cheshire East Council procedures.

Previous experience working as an Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) or similar role.

Experience within both children’s and adult social care settings.

Experience producing high-quality analytical reports for senior management or legal purposes.
